The Houthuis is an amazing little place on the Breede. It’s 8km outside Bonnievale, only 2 hours outside Cape Town. They offer a dorm style house that sleeps 12 at most, but the venue is certainly not tacky. You step outside onto a sloping lawn which leads straight into the river, just 15 metres away. In summer, it’s a brilliant place to sit, and in winter, you can have a roaring fire in the house all day. There are canoes and tubes to spend on the river too, as well as “Tarzan” swings. There is also a little bit of wildlife, and even now when it’s heading into winter, there were still some great birds around.

It was really an awesome place to spend the weekend with some great people.

Birds as they appear below:

  1. Fiscal Shrike
  2. Could be a Cormorant or a Darter.
  3. Brown-Hooded Kingfisher
